Mesh Fencing Removal
Aberdeen City Council, in partnership with Forestry Commission Scotland and an external Woodland Consultant became involved in and supported the Tree for Every Citizen initiative between 2010 and 2013. This initiative saw around 212,000 native tree species being planted across Aberdeen City in two phases.
The community of Bridge of Don was able to plant, with the help of Aberdeen City Council Countryside Ranger Service, a total 15,375 trees in Westfield park in these two phases where there had previously been amenity cut grass. This was intended to not only make the park more visually diverse / attractive but also to increase biodiversity, carbon capture and community engagement.
Each section of trees was surrounded by mesh fencing to allow the trees to grow without being damaged by deer and rabbits. Over time the mesh fencing became damaged and worn and was a hazard to the wildlife, young children and pets. The Friends group worked hard to remove the fencing, usually by hand (but sometimes with the help of a tractor) over a period of a few years. All the removed fencing has now been collected for disposal by the Aberdeen City Council Operations team.
